A former collegiate player for AFW President Jim Barnes, now the head football coach at Immaculate Conception High School in suburban Elmhurst, Illinois had his high school program featured on ESPN by former NFL player Matt Bowen who currently serves as a sports journalist and media commentator. In the article, Bowen comments on the various lessons he has learned after one season serving as a high school football coach.
Bowen was a four-year letterman at the University of Iowa, was the St. Louis Rams ‘Rookie of the Year’ and played for the Green Bay Packers, Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills as well. His ESPN article shares thoughts on the spread offense prevalent in high school and college that he feels will continue to influence the NFL in the coming years. He also shares insightful comments on the challenges of organizing practice, teaching technique as well as the value of conditioning players at the start of practice.
In reflecting on Head Coach Bill Krefft, Bowen comments that now he is on a football staff his views have changed from when he was a player. Now he realizes “it starts and ends with the head coach. He is the most important man in the building, even if the players do not realize it.” As for Coach Krefft, “he’s special. He gets it. A true teacher.”
Bell Krefft played for Coach Barnes at Augustana College as an under-sized but relentless, highly-effective and at times dominating defensive end. He has served as the head coach at Immaculate Conception since the 2012 season. His Knights teams have been regular qualifiers for the Illinois state playoffs advancing to the semi-finals last season.
Reflecting on his time playing for Coach Barnes, Krefft was complimentary stating that while playing for Coach Barnes “I learned most everything I know football wise ….the kids use your Academic Game Plan daily and our practice are set up just like yours was – ‘boards’ and conditioning is first.” The IC Knights open their 2016 campaign August 26th hosting Bishop McNamara.
