Dubuque Spartans Land in and Enjoy Barcelona
The University of Dubuque Spartans landed in Barcelona on Wednesday morning to begin a fantastic journey in this special part of the world. After check-in at the hotel and a refreshing shower the team, staff and family members went to the beautiful Port Olimpic to enjoy a plentiful lunch with a view of one of Barcelona’s many harbors. Port Olimpic is located on the grounds that housed Olympic athletes from all over the world at the 1992 Summer Olympics. After the games concluded it was converted to a modern urban area with a myriad of restaurants, clubs and condos to be enjoyed by the people of Barcelona and beyond.
Afterwards the group went on an educational tour of Old Barcelona, Barri Gotic, and learned of the development of Barcelona from its founding by the Roman Empire through medieval times. The tour started on the famous Las Ramblas as the group made its way down one of the liveliest streets in the world with a stop at the market, La Bouqueria, for some additional fresh snacks. The group then spent some time in beautiful Placa Reial where people of all nations gather to relax. Through the narrow streets team members were able to view ancient Roman ruins, the magnificent cathedral as well as learn of how people lived in this city at the crossroads of cultures – Northern European, Latin, Moorish – and more centuries ago.
People in the travel party had free time to further explore the area before gathering at hard Rock Café in Placa de Catalunya before transportation to dinner at a Barcelona restaurant where they were joined by members of the Adelphi (NY) women’s field hockey team.
After transportation to the hotel, some members freshened up for an evening in magical Barcelona as transportation cards provided by AFW allowed them transportation back into Barri Gotic or to Port Olimpic.
