The CWRU Spartans, who put together possibly the most successful and certainly one of their best seasons of college football in their university’s history, will be departing on Friday for Europe. Over a nine-day, eight-night journey they will take in the breath-taking beauty of Lake Como, Italy and equally impressive sites in Switzerland consisting of Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern and Zurich, Switzerland.
Early in their journey the Spartans will play an international friendly contest against the highly successful and proud Milano Rhinos American Football Club. The Rhinos were champions of the Italian Football League a year ago and finished second last season. Both teams played each other in 2015 when the Spartans visited Italy. After securing an impressive victory the Spartans moved south and amongst other highlights took in the fascinating historical sites of Cinque Terra, Florence and Rome.
Based on the positive experience for both organizations in 2015, a rematch game was desired and scheduled. Kickoff is Sunday, May 12 at 3:30 pm (Milan time). Afterward members of both teams will gather for a post-game meal and social. The whole day, with the thrill of an international game then sharing time and stories with their Italian opponents and hosts, will definitely be a highlight in the journey.
After the game, for this tour the Spartans will move north. They will first head to the strikingly beautiful city lakeside city of Lucerne and take an excursion to the summit of Mt. Pilatus. Here the Spartans will take in one of the most spectacular panoramic views overlooking the Swiss Alps and mountain lakes below. From Lucerne the group will move on to a couple of days in the outdoor recreation haven of Interlaken. Travelers will have numerous options – white water rafting, mountain hiking and biking, canyoning, and more amongst available choices. From Interlaken the Spartans tour group, which includes student-athletes, family members and coaching staff, then moves on to the Swiss capital of Bern. After a couple of evenings in this charming and fun city the group concludes their tour with an evening in Zurich, consistently ranked as one of the most livable and popular cities in Europe.
The Spartans return to the USA on Saturday, May 19th.
