USA-AFW ELITE Pre-game vs. France National Team 2013

AFW ELITE has earned growing respect around the globe for being a leading force in positively impacting American football internationally at the U19 level.  In April of 2017 American Football Worldwide expanded their high school select team programming and brought the first-ever USA high school select team to Ireland for the inaugural international game between the two countries.  After a highly successful tour for both US high school students and family members – as well as for the Irish national team in their efforts to develop their players and programming, AFW was invited by the Irish American Football Association and returned to Ireland in 2018 with a US representative team in an effort to assist the Irish in continuing their efforts to develop the game of American football in their country.  AFW ELITE is returning to Ireland for a third consecutive year in what will hopefully become an annual event and has now organized highly successful high school select team tours to France, Italy and Ireland.

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

The 2019 Ireland tour agenda includes a daily practice to prepare for these historic international games with the remainder of your days in Ireland filled with insightful educational tours and relaxed experiences immersing tour participants into the welcoming and friendly culture that is ‘all-things Irish’. The tour schedule looks to maximize the time in Ireland and is ambitious. You will spend evenings in mystical Galway, authentically Irish Limerick and then return to the lively capital of Dublin for additional touring and the international game.

Arriving at Dublin International Airport on Sunday, March 31 the team and tour group will begin its tour with a drive west toward Ireland’s mystical and festive Galway Bay.  The first stop will be an impressive one as the group takes in a tour of famed Trim Castle – the filming location of castle scenes in the Academy Award winning movie Braveheart.  The group will also enjoy a provided lunch then move on to visit Athlone along the famed-Shannon River.  Should scheduling allow one more quick stop at historically significant Clonmacnoise Monastery, which highlights the role of Irish monasteries in preserving the Catholic Church and Christianity after the collapse of the Roman Empire, is planned.

You will be ‘off-and-running’ on a full first day then settle into the beautiful resort bay city of Galway on the west coast of “The Emerald Island”. It will be easy to be comfortable and charmed by Galway, it’s natural beauty, colorful cafes and pubs, street performers and lively feel as a quarter of the population is of student age. The following day, on Monday morning, the team will have its first practice and then the entire tour group will thoroughly enjoy this city and all it has to offer in the afternoon into the evening..

On Tuesday the tour group will depart for Limerick. Along the way you will be awed with the stop at the stunning Cliffs of Moher, potentially the most photographed site in Ireland. There will be time to take in the impressive nature of this famous landmark along with a chance for a lunch snack. The tour group will then make its way to Limerick where you will receive an orientation to the city.  A late afternoon or evening practice is scheduled at the outstanding athletic fields at the University of Limerick.  On Wednesday you will tour Bunratty Castle, one of the most famous and best preserved, and its folk grounds as well as Limerick.  Free time will also be provided in what is often referred to as the ‘most Irish’ of Ireland’s cities. There will be a final evening practice, this one likely to be with members of the University of Limerick Vikings American football club.  These co-practices are traditionally a highlight of all HS select tours.  Family members are welcome to attend or enjoy the festive pub scene readily available in Ireland.

Thursday morning the team and tour group moves on to Dublin with a potential stop in beautiful County Kildare. Once in Dublin over the following days the group will take in all the fascinating landmarks including St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle, Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Croke Park and the Gaelic Athletic Hall of Fame, Guinness Storehouse and Temple Bar amongst other highlights. Saturday is “Game Day” as you will line up in the Red, White and Blue to compete representing the USA while serving as an ambassador for the great game of American football.  Parents will have an opportunity for morning touring followed by a pre-game tailgate. For athletes and spectators, this rare and special international contest will be one of the highlights of your athletic career.

After the game we will have an unforgettable celebration with our Irish hosts and the opportunities all had to grow together through the game of football.  You are invited to begin some overseas friendships that you can carry into the future.  Invite someone to visit you in the US – and better yet put yourself in a position to come back and visit Ireland again.

You will return home on April 7th to eagerly share stories from the most remarkable week – and likely the most unique and special football game – you will have experienced in your life.

Go USA – Play to Win!
