American Football Worldwide director Jim Barnes organized and introduced speakers at the International Education session for the American Football Coaches Association at its recent national convention in San Antonio, Texas. Aspiring football coaches from Europe, Mexico, Canada and the United States were in attendance as three speakers shared their perspectives, insights and advice on the great game of American football outside of the United States.
Coach Val Gunn, with experience coaching for several clubs and in a number of countries in Europe, highlighted the list of speakers. Coach Gunn, currently head coach of the Wroclaw Panthers in Poland, shared insights from coaching stints in Norway, France and Italy as well as his current location. His talk “The Road Less Travelled: Reflections, Realities and Rewards of Coaching Abroad” met the description as his journey has been one of tremendous self-growth and of great value to his family as well.
Coach Austin Jones who spent a couple years with the Warsaw Sharks in Warsaw, Poland leading them to an undefeated season in 2017, kicked off the session with an enthusiastic and detailed presentation focusing on People, Preparation and Performance elements in order to be a successful coach overseas. Coach Mike Caniglia, currently at Upper Iowa University, focused on the issues a coach from the United States needs to consider when taking a look at a coaching experience abroad.
The 2020 AFCA Convention will be held in Nashville.
