Jim Barnes Featured Speaker at France Player-Coach Academy
Coach Jim Barnes, President of American Football Worldwide, has been invited to be the featured speaker and clinician at the School of American Football Junior Alpine in Thonon-les-Bains, in southeast France. The Academy runs from August 25th through August 30th. During morning and afternoon sessions coaches from France will be instructing players ages 13 to 18. Enrollment comes from players in France and neighboring Switzerland whose ambition drives them to develop greater technical skill in playing American football. Coach Barnes will observe on field drills to take notes and make potential constructive suggestions regarding drill implementation and skill development.
In the evenings, Coach Barnes will speak on all phases of the game to the approximately 30-plus coaches who also attend the academy. Offense, defense, special teams concepts will all be covered with an emphasis on the coordination of skill development through technical training at numerous positions.
The academy is hosted at the Moynat Joseph Sports Complex in Thonon-les-Bains. The leading facility of its kind in the region it has two drive-grass fields, a weight room, two indoor gymnasiums and a hall of honor. Coach Larry Legault, highly successful head coach of the two-time defending national champion Thonon-les-Bains Black Panthers and the senior national team of France has been the camp director for nine seasons.
Coach Jim Barnes has collected over 25 years worth of coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level, 16 of those as a head coach. In those 25 years Jim had the good fortune of never being part of a losing season. As a head coach he lead his teams to 116 victories and as a player (Augustana College) and a coach (College of Wooster & Augustana College) has been a part of over 200 collegiate victories.
As a college head coach, in just five seasons at the College of Wooster Jim ranks 4th in all-time wins and 1st in winning percentage for those who served over one season. He lead a team effort reviving a 1-9 program to a 9-1, co-championship seasons just three years later. In eleven seasons at Augustana, Jim is the 2nd winningest coach in school history and as a head coach has the 6th best overall winning percentage all-time in the rugged College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. His Vikings football teams won three conference championships and competed in the national playoffs twice.
Coach Barnes has served as an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special terms coordinator at various times. His units and individuals within those units have set school single game and season records in over 40 categories. In addition, his units have frequently been ranked nationally.
