The Augustana College football team recently completed its 7th international education and competition tour this time journeying to Ireland. It was a fantastic experience for the Augustana football family as the team, staff and many family members – totaling 117 travelers – all grew closer through the adventures international travel offers. In the athletic highlight of the trip the Vikings defeated the proud Belfast Trojans American Football Club 65-0.
During the game on Saturday, May 25th the Vikings had to work hard in the first half as the Trojans defense limited big plays. However, the Vikings were methodical on offense putting up four first half touchdowns and though the Trojans offense and special teams executed some big plays the Augie defense kept them off the board for a 28-0 first half lead. In the latter part of the second half the Vikings depth seemed to wear down the Trojans and some defensive big plays contributed to a final 65-0 Augustana victory.
After landing in Dublin the tour group moved west across the island with stops in Athlone, Clonmacnoise Monastery and Galway. A visual highlight was an excursion to the famed Cliffs of Moher. After a few days on the west coast of the Emerald Island on the journey to Northern Ireland the team stopped for a visit to Trim Castle in County Meath. Around the international game activities the tour group thoroughly enjoyed the resurgent city of Belfast. The final three nights of the tour had the Augustana Vikings in the Irish capital city of Dublin where visits to Trinity College and the Book of Kells, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Guinness Storehouse were featured amongst many other highlights.
The Augustana College Vikings open their 2019 football season hosting Coe College on Saturday, September 7th. The Belfast Trojans continue their season with a big game versus the South Dublin Panthers on June 9th.
