Starting in the spring of 2015 five successful annual adventures have now been thoroughly enjoyed by US players and family travelers as well as our Italian hosts. With the development of mutually supportive and respectful relationships between American Football Worldwide and the Italian Federation of American Football (FIDAF), AFW has consistently been invited to return a US high school select team to Italy. FIDAF will once again bring in players from Italy’s top American football clubs from throughout their country. Italy’s national American football team gathers several times a year for a series of practices before contests against other European national teams and tournaments. They will do the same in taking on the USA-representative AFW ELITE squad. The Italians have found that playing against Americans has advanced their play in other international competitions and it is very clear the past couple of years that their national teams are improving.
AFW has toured high school and college teams to Europe for several years now. In 2013 AFW ELITE brought the first group of high school players ever to compete in France against their national U19 team, who had placed 5th in the World Championships the preceding summer earning a hard-fought 19-0 victory. In 2014, AFW ELITE took on France’s defending national 19U champions, the Paris Flash, and cruised to victory for the USA. Since 2015 AFW ELITE has accepted invitations to tour and play in Italy versus their national 19U team and secured three “road victories” – but with the Italian team showing steady if not significant progress. In 2017 and 2018 AFW ELITE also toured another high school select team to Ireland. AFW has also toured several NCAA Division III college teams scheduling competitions with senior European club teams in Italy, France, Ireland and Spain. They are looking to expand into new countries including Germany, the United Kingdom and Austria in the next year.
