AFW is accepting nominations with high school players having the ability to self-nominate. Feel free to contact us through the email address listed below. Registrations will be accepted until each roster is full – with no more than two-deep at each position grouping.
The AFW ELITE Italy team, staff and family members will depart on Saturday March, 23, 2019 and return on Sunday, March 31st. International Game Day is set for Saturday, March 30th in the vicinity of Milan, Italy. The AFW ELITE Ireland team will depart Saturday, March 30 and will play on April 6, 2019. They return to the USA the following day on April, 7.
Besides the thrill of competing in international competition, student-athletes, coaches and traveling family members experience a nine-day, 8-night journey that takes travelers to and through many of the iconic highlights of these historically significant, fascinating and beautiful countries.
The Italy tour begins in Rome where travelers will visit the one-and-only Roman Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and many more of the landmarks in classic imperial Rome. The tour group will also visit Vatican City where the group will and enter St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums as well as the Sistine Chapel. On Tuesday the tour will move north through beautiful Tuscany with an afternoon stop in remarkably preserved Siena, then enjoy day stops in Florence and Cinque Terra – the exquisite “Italian Riviera”. The final days of the remarkable journey will have the U.S. travel party staying at the southern tip of famous Lake Como just north of Milan where the game versus the Italian national team will be played.
After an overnight flight, the Ireland team and tour group will spend a couple of evenings in Galway, then Limerick and finish with a three-night stay in Dublin. During their travels on the ‘Emerald Island’ sites to be visited and enjoyed include the impressive Cliffs of Moher, beautiful Galway Bay, Clonmacnoise Monastery, Bunratty Castle, the University of Limerick, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Croke Park with the Gaelic Athletic Association Hall of Fame, famous Guinness Storehouse and Trim Castle – filming location for the Academy Award winning film Braveheart.
With the goal of entering into additional national and cross-cultural contests in Europe, the Irish American Football Federation wants their younger players to learn from the people that know and execute American football the best. Due to AFW’s positive reputation earned through several highly successful high school select and small college tours to other destinations in Europe, the IAFA has chosen to work with AFW to bring a US team to help our great game further develop in their country.
Playbooks will be distributed a week to ten days before departure. Practices take place most every day generally in the morning. On occasion we may have a night co-practice with some eager American football club teams from Italy or Ireland. Know that the bulk of the day includes a combination of scheduled touring and some free exploration time. Our intention is to be prepared to represent on the field extremely well, but also maximize the various educational aspects and value of this special international travel experience. Italy and Ireland are truly remarkable places to explore, learn and enjoying.
High school senior players or their parents interested in this special once-in-a-lifetime opportunity are encouraged to immediately contact AFW. The young men who join this team will experience an incomparable week of learning while improving their football skills as they practice with other ambitious and adventurous players from around the US. In addition, the experience serving as an ambassador for our great game and country will add to their positive growth. Many of our past ELITE players have carried friendships into and now beyond their college years. In total, this tour can be one of the most influential and memorable experiences of a young man’s life.
AFW has toured high school and college teams to Europe since 2013 when they brought their first AFW ELITE team of high school players to compete in France against their national U19 team, who had placed 5th in the World Championships the preceding summer earning a hard-fought 19-0 victory. In 2014, AFW ELITE took on France’s defending national U19 champions, the Paris Flash, and cruised to victory for the USA. Since 2015 AFW ELITE has accepted invitations to tour and play in Italy versus their national U19 team and secured four “road victories” – but with the Italian team showing steady and significant progress. In 2017 AFW ELITE began touring a second high school AFW ELITE team to Ireland “Making History” in organizing the first competition between the USA and Ireland in high school football. This spring will be our third annual journey. AFW has also toured several NCAA Division III college teams scheduling competitions with senior European club teams in Italy, France, Ireland, Switzerland and Spain.
