IMG_2882AFW’s ELITE team and tour party arrived in Rome on Sunday, March 20th. Coming from all four corners of the United States, players and family members from Washington state to Georgia and Southern California to New Jersey all came together remarkably meeting in Rome’s city centre. Meeting in front of Rome’s famous, historic and newly renovated Trevi Fountain tour groups split up to take in various sites of Rome’s city centre including the incomparable Pantheon and Navonna Square. The group spent time exploring into the early evening before returning to the hotel for dinner and a night’s rest.

The following day, was an ambitious one. Beginning in the morning the tour group met at the Roman Coliseum where team and individual photos were taken. Thereafter the group had a guided tour through the most famous arena in the world. From there the tour moved into the Roman Forum, the political and economic center of the world for nearly a millennium.  After lunch, the afternoon was spent touring the vast Vatican Museums including a reflective stop in the Sistine Chapel.   The tour concluded in the immense and beautiful St. Peter’s Cathedral with the group wrapping up their touring day in St. Peter’s Square.

IMG_2977For many the tremendous day became even more exciting as the AFW ELITE squad headed to their first practice partnering at night with the Lazio Marines, central Italy’s premier American football club.  After installing some formations and schemes, AFW ELITE and the Marines scrimmaged with both squads making a positive impression on each other in their execution and spirit for the game.  A small social followed afterwards as the players exchanged stories about the game they have come to love, their respective cultures and contact information in the hopes their paths would cross again.
