An insightful look at American Football Worldwide’s ELITE program is featured as a part of the Podyum’s innovative and insightful web series on American football, and the growth it is experiencing, outside of the United States. AFW ELITE is a team of high school football players from the United States put together annually who travel overseas to represent the USA in international competition all the while receiving the highly valuable education uniquely a part of foreign travel. AFW makes all necessary travel, touring, accommodation, meal and practice arrangements. The team is selected by AFW from coaching recommendations, self-nomination and with the assistance of NCSA. Student-athletes seek support and sponsorship to be able to realize the benefits of this special journey.
Players selected for the squad receive AFW playbooks a week to ten days before departure overseas. Travel and game apparel is also provided. Once overseas and gathered together the US representative team practices daily, usually first thing in the morning. It is a significant, but exhilarating challenge to put together and coordinate the various mechanics of a football team in less than one weeks time. Typical the international opponent is the national U19 team of the country being visited.
After morning practice, the remainder of travel days are spent touring and taking in the history and architecture, as well as absorbing other cultural components, of the country being visited. Opportunities for US players to visit with American football players of the host country as well as others are constructed into the touring schedule. About half of the players on the USA-AFW roster are accompanied by parents and other family members.
In four years, AFW ELITE is 4-0 securing victories over the national U19 team of France, the defending U19 national champion of France and the national U19 team of Italy on two occasions.
